Poetry Essay

Paper, Order, or Assignment Requirements

Poetry Essay, 3-4 Pages over Edgar Allan Poe’s Annabel Lee. Write a reader response essay on one of the poems we have read—but only if you did not choose this approach for your short story essay. (See pp. 1275-76 in our anthology for a brief overview of reader response theory.) What do you think about the poem in general? The language? The imagery? The tone? The form? The meter? The rhyme scheme (if there is one)? How do you as a modern reader respond to the poem? What kind of process do you use to read the poem? How do you surmount the language barrier if the poem is from an earlier stage of English? How do you fill in the gaps (if there are any)? Note: These are just some questions to get you started. You may focus on any aspect you wish, but just be sure to home in on your individual response to the poem. Finally, using first person is both acceptable and expected in a reader response essay.
