Pleasure according to Mill

Paper, Order, or Assignment Requirements

In this paper you will be asked to consider Mill’s contribution to the study of ethics. At a higher level, consider how Mill understands the concept of ethics and how his philosophy is shaped by that consideration. Keep your essays focused and clear.

TOPIC:
Pleasure: What is the greatest happiness principle? Mill attempts to defend his theory against the objection that a moral view that supposes life to have no higher end than pleasure is “a doctrine worthy only of swine.” Mill argues, “It is better to be a human being dissatisfied than a pig satisfied; better to be Socrates dissatisfied than a fool satisfied. And if the fool, or the pig, are go a different opinion, it is because they only know their own side of the question. The other party to the comparison knows both sides.” Examine Mill’s argument in response to these objection (and others). Does he successfully defend utilitarianism? How are we to distinguish higher and lower pleasure? is Mill’s appeal to “competent judges who have experienced both pleasures” plausible? Is pleasure the only thing we value (or ought to value) for its own sake?
