Cadmium and Cadmium Compounds

Paper, Order, or Assignment Requirements

Cadmium and cadmium compounds
This assignment consists of three parts:
• Part A you need to provide an overview of the occupational assessment strategy for
Cadmium and cadmium compounds
• Part B consists of a discussion of the toxicity of Cadmium and cadmium compounds
• Part C is where information from Parts A and B are analysed in addition to further
research on Cadmium and cadmium compounds to establish the threshold of harm and
determine the relevance of current Occupational Exposure Limits (OELs).
Part A: Occupational Assessment Strategy (20 marks):
Discuss the monitoring strategy for the airborne contaminant for personal sampling. The
following topics should be covered:
1. Sources and routes of exposure (4)
2. Appropriate sampling equipment required (8)
3. Type of biological monitoring testing required (if any) (2)
4. Tabulate applicable legislation, standards and methods for analysis and exposure limits
Part B: Toxicology (toxicokinetics & toxicodynamics) (10 marks)
Discuss the toxicology of Cadmium and Cadmium compounds as per the following headings:
1. Absorption (2 marks)
2. Distribution in the body & target organs (2 marks)
3. Pathways for biotransformation (2 marks)
4. Mechanisms of harm (interaction with cells & tissue) (2 marks)
5. Pathways of elimination (2 marks)
Part C: Hygiene standard setting and toxicology (10 marks)
In addition to the information gathered in Part A and Part B, you are required to research
further information on the relationship between exposure to Cadmium and cadmium
compounds (dose) and harm. You will need to research both human and animal studies to
develop a view of the dose-effect and dose-response relationships. In your discussion
consider and reference at least 2 animal and 2 human studies to support your findings. The
research studies should be reviewed to try to ascertain the threshold of harm for Cadmium and
cadmium compounds from the literature. You must then compare the determined threshold of
harm with the Occupational Exposure Limit (OEL) that applies for Cadmium and cadmium
compounds in Australia. If there is a difference between the threshold that emerges from the
review of the research studies and the quoted OEL, possible reasons for the discrepancy
should be discussed. In summary:
• You need to identify the threshold of harm for Cadmium and cadmium compounds from
the research literature
• Compare your findings of the threshold for Cadmium and cadmium compounds to OELs
that apply in Australia
• Discuss the differences you find with references and the appropriate literature
