A Case Study: Early Intervention in Psychosis

Paper, Order, or Assignment Requirements

This is a case study:
C is a 16 year old boy who is in Year 11 of the local secondary school. About 4 months ago he started withdrawing from his family and friends wanting to spend increasing amounts of time alone in his room and not wanting to go out. He had previously been doing well at school and was expected to achieve 5 GCSEs and go on to the local College for the sixth form where he had planned to study computing.
In addition his behavior has become increasingly bizarre. He says that he hears voices that comment on his actions and tell him what to do. He hears messages from the TV that are especially for him. His family have observed him talking to himself and he often appears suspicious.

What will be expected in the paper:
The Consultant psychiatrist has assessed C and concludes that C is displaying acute psychotic symptoms, and is recommending medication as a first line approach. You will be attending a family meeting with the Consultant psychiatrist, C, and his parents who want to know more about the use of medication with C’s disorder. To prepare yourself for this meeting, you will need to write an report of what medications could appropriately be prescribed and what the published evidence base on their use suggests the advantages and disadvantages of each might be. So that C and his family fully understand treatment options, you will also need to discuss what non- pharmacological interventions could also be used alongside medication, and whether and how this combined approach this might be beneficial for C and his family.

Because C is 16 years old, the whole paper should be under the theme of adolescent psychosis.

For the medications part, at least Risperidone, Aripiprazole, Olanzapine and Colzapine should be covered.
Since Risperidone is the first line medication and Aripiprazole is the second line medication for psychosis, these two medications may need more space to talk about than the other two. When talking about each medication, please cover what does the medication do, usage, dose, side effects and what should been take care of when side effects appeared and so on. As mentioned above, those things should be publish evidence based, and please describe detailed data and what happened in the study in this paper.

For the non-pharmacological intervention, CBT and family therapy should be covered. Please talk about what does each intervention do in this is (for example, CBT may be good for decreasing negative symptoms in psychosis, how and why). Also, please do not forget to talk about how the combination of medication and intervention might be benefit for C.
