  • Strategic Leadership in A Gift Shop
  • One of my goals in life is to own my own business. One idea that I am seriously considering is opening a gift basket shop, where I make the baskets at home and sell them online. If successful, the eventual plan is to invest in an outside shop and add additional gift option merchandise to my trade, thus, creating a gift shop. For this assignment, I plan to use my idea for my business to discuss strategic leadership and competitive advantage.
  • There are many different approaches to strategic leadership, but I feel that the one that would be most useful in starting and building a successful gift shop would be to use the 9 steps of strategic thinking that Horne and Wootten discuss in their book, Strategic Thinking: A Nine Step Approach to Strategy and Leadership for Managers and Marketers. The nine steps are 1) gather strategic intelligence 2) assess strategic capability 3) create strategic knowledge 4) make strategic predictions 5) develop strategic vision 6) create strategic options 7) take strategic decisions 8) create and communicate market-led strategy and 9) plan and manage projects to implement change (Horne & Wootten, 2010). The nine steps of strategic thinking teach a leader how to lead by teaching them how to think. “Inclination towards strategic thinking can create a vital function at two levels i.e. individual and organizational leading to form the basis of a steady competitive advantage” (Mahdavian, Mirabi, & Haghshenas, 2014).  To truly build anything, a sturdy foundation is key. I feel that using the nine steps would give me that foundation I need to enter the market with a competitive advantage.
  • Why is competitive advantage important? All for profit businesses are in business to ultimately make the most money that they can. By having a competitive advantage, a business has more power over the market than its competitors. More power likely guarantees more customers, more sales, and more profits. If a company owns a monopoly or offers a good or service that has no viable substitutes then there might be no competitors, thus, no need for a competitor advantage. However, in the United States, where a monopoly is virtually illegal, this is very unlikely to be the case. With that said, having a competitive advantage, could mean the difference between an effective or failed business endeavor.

  • Evaluate which of the approaches to strategic leadership as represented in the readings would fit best for an organization such as yours in order to sustain a competitive advantage?
  • Based upon my reading s of “Developing the Leader’s Strategic Mindset: Establishing the Measures” (Pisapia J., 2005) I would state that my current organization is a “Reframing” organization. Based on the  following experiences and insights this week through our studies and my offsite organizational X-Matrix (A Hoshin Kanri X-matrix is a one page documented strategic plan of an organization that includes goals, strategies, strategic projects and owners in layman terms- a policy deployment) meetings.
  • During my meetings, I noticed that we were putting all the issues we were addressing for the X-matrix into various areas i.e. what we know, what we don’t know and what assumptions/risks we had. I noticed that we were doing exactly what Cuban (1990) states…”What shapes [these perceptions] are [one’s] previous personal and work experiences, [one’s] beliefs and values, the position [one holds] within an organization, and the expected role [one] is to play within that organization” (p.2). We were playing the roles of Quality director, HR manager, R&D, Ops manager, etc., everyone was relating to past issues, experiences in order to try to establish our objectives for FY 19. I realized why we were using this method as we were trying to analyze our organization’s situation. Bolman and Deal (1991) and Mogan G. (1986) books “These important books described the value of reframing approach and its ability to analyze and respond to organizational situations through the use of multiple frames” (Pisapia, J., 2005).
  • I am also learning that we reframing to drive new organization changes/values across the globe in order to get everyone on board and rolling the same direction. “The importance of reframing is found in its ability to plant and nurture new values in an organization while jettisoning old meanings and understandings” (snow et al., 1986).
  • Are all organizations competitive?
  • “The new organization is affected by global competition and must clearly focus on global action. Modern organizations must be innovative because innovation is the basis for further operative development and a prerequisite for gaining competitive advantage”. (Kareska, Katerinaand Jovanov, Tamara, 2016). Based on my research and this week’s studies I would say all organizations those for profit and non-profits according to NonProfit Hub “No matter the sector, competition is an issue that can’t be ignored.” Regardless of the sector in order to attar the next customer, original equipment manufacturer (OEM) or charity donator an organization has to be competitive or risk coming to an end.
  • How might you be able to synthesize the two approaches to leadership and strategy?
  • Based on my experiences working in various leadership roles “strategy and leadership” go hand in hand.  If you noticed, I change the order in parenthesis is it is my belief that you have to have a strategy first in order to know where you want to head. This turns allows you to lead your organization and followers, etc., “Strategic planning in the sense is more linked to the work of classical management, while thinking is linked more to the work of leadership” (Shelton & Darling, 2001).  We can only lead if we have a plan or strategic direction and without it in my opinion we are the blind leading the blind.
